RTI - Response to Intervention - Video for teachers

http://www.readinghorizons.com/solutions/markets/rti.aspx
This is a great explanation of the Response to Intervention Model (Also known as RTI). This system will be in place in July 2009, so it is important for all educators and others in the schools to be aware how the program works.

This video is quite long...so get a bowl of popcorn before you view)!

After the RTI model is explained, this district explains the "Discover Intensive Phonics" computer program that they use to assist students on all Tiers of the RTI Model.

We also have been having PDs on RTI and I have found it very helpful. However this training would have been much more useful in the beginning of the year rather than midway. I like the way they use running records to assess the children and pinpoint exactly where the children are having difficulty thus driving instruction for the next guided reading time. Atleast I will be prepared for the beginning of the new school year. I also attended a PD given by Pat Pavelka and she has great ideas for guided reading groups and centers. I have already used many of her ideas in my classroom and they work great. One of the ideas is to put little sticky notes with stop signs at the end of every page of a story. This will tell the student to stop, go back and reread and think about what they just read. This has improved the comprehension skills of my kids. For higher level readers, the sticky notes can go at the end of a paragraph in a chapter book and used the same way. I also use sticky notes to cover parts of words during guided reading leaving only the beginning sound showing. The children have to use different strategies to figure out the word. The kids love it and are anxious for reading group everyday.
